Appalachian Institution Expands 2009 Offerings:

Four Retreats at Lake Logan and Kanuga Conference Centers, Winter Houseparty at Biltmore Estate.

The Appalachian Institution, Inc. will host five scholastic programs during 2009 in North Carolina's beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.

Leading off will be a Winter"Houseparty" March 8-11 at The Inn on Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC featuring daily lectures by Dr. Charles W. Calhoun of East Carolina University on "The Gilded Age".

A retreat at historic Kanuga Conference Center near Hendersonville is scheduled for May 17-21 and will feature Dr. Michael H. Hunt, professor emeritus at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Hunt's topic will be "The American Ascendency".

In August, The Appalachian Institution returns to Lake Logan Conference Center near Waynesville, NC for three retreats:

•August 3-7 will feature Dr. Michael Allen Gillespie of
  Duke University lecturing on "The Noble, The Good
  and The Free: Western Ideals of Ethical Life"

•August 9-13, Dr. Max L. Gross, former Dean of the
  School of Intelligence Studies at The Defense
  Intelligence College, will deliver a series of lectures
  titled "Islam and The West"

•August 24-28, Dr. Michael P. Zuckert of Notre Dame
  University will lecture with video and audio
  presentations on the topic, "The Founding Fathers:
  What Were They Thinking?"

Sited at unique properties in and near Asheville, NC, the Institution's retreats are an island of peace and tranquility. Each retreat features lectures, fine entertainment, instruction in a variety of crafts, skills, and educational topics as well as opportunities for participation in mountaineering and sports activities. Participants are invited to be fully engaged or fully relaxed, while enjoying venues of great   natural beauty, warm hospitality and intellectual stimulation .
