House Party at Biltmore Estate When the Vanderbilts were in residence at Biltmore House, they often hosted house parties for their friends. Now you can enjoy a similar unique experience with a group of interesting, like-minded people who will soon be your friends! On April 3-6, 2011 at the Inn on Biltmore Estate, The Appalachian Institution will host a "Spring House Party" featuring an exciting series of lectures titled "The House that George Built : Creating Biltmore Estate”. John M. Bryan is Distinguished Professor Emeritus and former Chairman of Art and Architectural History at The University of South Carolin. He is also author of the seminal book on the House, G.W. Vanderbilt’s Biltmore Estate: The Most Distinguished Private Place. Dr. Bryan will lead us on a journey of discovery encompassing influences and backgrounds of the principal players: George Washington Vanderbilt, architect Richard Morris Hunt, and the Landscape Architect, Frederick Law Olmsted. Through both illustrated lecture and specially guided tours, he will explore with us the European research tour to French Chateaux and English Country Houses; the planning, logistics and process for construction, interior finishes and decoration; all culminating in the first gala House Party at Christmas, 1895. In other words, he will paint with a broad palate from conception to completion of America’s largest (135,000 square feet – or four acres!) and most distinguished private house. This is a rare chance to know and understand Biltmore as few others have. The "house party" is a collaboration between The Biltmore Company and The Appalachian Institution, Inc. to bring prominent scholars to The Biltmore Estate on an occasional basis to lecture on topics of historical interest. House party guests will be resident at the Inn on Biltmore Estate. The package includes deluxe room accommodations, a seated welcome dinner, the chef's abundant hot breakfast buffet each morning and cocktails each evening. The daily morning lectures are complemented by fine evening entertainments including a rare concert in Biltmore House itself and a cocktail reception on Biltmore's roof, offering a grand vista of the Estate. Throughout the house party, guests will enjoy free access to Biltmore House, its grounds and beautiful gardens, primed for the Biltmore’s annual Festival of Flowers which begins April 3rd." In addition, there are the many pleasures of the Inn itself, which has completed a rooms re-fresh. Its luxurious accommodations, fine dining, attentive staff and all the other amenities of this four-star hotel are complemented by its magnificent views of the Blue Ridge Mountains on every side. A wide variety of activities such as the new spa, golf, fly-fishing, hiking, biking, horseback riding, etc. are also available at additional charges. And if the life of a country grandee doesn't hold enough excitement for you, the vibrant City of Asheville awaits just outside the gates of the Estate! So do yourself a favor.
